Lost the original file of a reel you made? Maybe you edited it on a phone that has since been replaced, or the draft disappeared from your editing app. Here are three ways to get your own Facebook Reels back, from quickest to most complete.

Option 1: Use FB Reels Downloader (fastest)

If your reel is public, you can save it like any other:

  1. Open your reel in the Facebook app and tap Share → Copy link.
  2. Paste the link into the Facebook Reels downloader.
  3. Download the HD version (or Audio if you only need the soundtrack).

This takes seconds and works on any device. Remember that Facebook re-encodes uploads, so the file is a high-quality copy rather than the exact original.

Option 2: Download it from Facebook’s app

For reels you posted yourself, Facebook may offer a save option in the reel’s ⋯ (more) menu. Availability varies by country, app version and whether the reel uses licensed music, so if you don’t see it, use one of the other options.

Option 3: Download your information (complete archive)

Facebook’s official Download your information tool, found in the Accounts Centre, exports everything you have posted, including videos and reels, as a ZIP file:

  1. Open Settings & privacy → Settings → Accounts Centre.
  2. Choose Your information and permissions → Download your information.
  3. Select your Facebook profile and choose Some of your information, then pick Posts (and Reels where listed).
  4. Choose a date range, the High media quality, and the HTML or JSON format.
  5. Submit the request. Facebook emails you when the archive is ready, which can take from minutes to a few days.

This is the best route if you need many reels at once, or reels that are no longer public.

Which option should you choose?

Situation Best option
One or two public reels, right now FB Reels Downloader
A reel without licensed music, on the latest app Facebook’s save option
Dozens of reels, or private ones Download your information

Tips for keeping your content safe in future

  • Export your edits before posting and keep the final file in cloud storage.
  • Back up regularly: a yearly “Download your information” archive is a good habit for creators.
  • Keep project files for apps like CapCut or Premiere so you can re-export in higher quality later.
