When you download a Facebook Reel you get three choices: HD, SD and Audio. This guide explains what each one is, why Facebook keeps several versions of the same reel, and which one you should pick.

Why Facebook stores several versions of every reel

Facebook serves billions of video views a day to phones on every kind of connection. To keep playback smooth, each upload is re-encoded into a ladder of versions at different resolutions and bitrates, and the player switches between them depending on your connection speed and screen size.

Two of those versions are complete MP4 files with picture and sound: the HD and SD files. The soundtrack is also stored on its own as an audio track. Those are exactly the three downloads FB Reels Downloader offers.

HD vs SD: the files with sound

Version Typical resolution What it is good for
HD 720p (720 × 1280 for a vertical reel) Watching on any phone, sharing, archiving
SD 360p (360 × 640) Saving storage or mobile data

Both use H.264 video and AAC audio inside an MP4 container, the most widely compatible combination there is. They play on iPhone, Android, Windows, Mac, smart TVs and every common video editor without extra codecs.

For almost everyone, HD is the right choice. Pick SD only if storage is tight or you are on a metered connection: an SD file is typically a quarter of the size.

The audio track

The Audio option is the original AAC soundtrack in an M4A file. Because it is not re-encoded, there is no quality loss. It is ideal for music, talks and recipes you want to listen to offline. The reels audio downloader lists this option first.

Why isn't there an HD option for some reels?

Facebook only produces an HD file when the original upload was high enough in resolution. If a creator uploaded a small or heavily compressed clip, SD is the best version that exists. No downloader can recover detail that was never uploaded.

How big are the files?

As a rough guide for a 30-second reel:

  • HD: 4–8 MB
  • SD: 1–3 MB
  • Audio: 0.2–0.5 MB

Longer reels scale up roughly in proportion.

Quick recommendations

  • Just want to keep a reel? Download HD.
  • Low on storage or data? Download SD.
  • Only care about the sound? Download Audio (M4A).
